Profile
Theoretical models and empirical data are brought together in a hands-on manner, using today’s most pressing environmental and sustainability issues as examples. Multidisciplinary perspectives are adopted, while the need for integrative and reflective discussions is emphasised. Lectures and seminars are given by Sodertorn University’s researchers, as well as guest lecturers from other universities, organisations, public authorities, and businesses. Students are given the opportunity to refine their skills in verbal and written presentations, as well as communication techniques. It is also possible to receive a 60-credit Master’s degree after one year of full-time study.Environment, Communication and Politics (ECP) has a particular focus on the various forms of communication between stakeholders, authorities, international organisations, NGOs and business representatives, emphasising how interests, power, and expert knowledge shape the ways in which key environmental hazards are perceived and acted upon locally, nationally and globally. The gap between scientific expertise on the one hand, and practical environmental administration on the other, is further analysed. The issue of how to bridge this gap is given high priority.Ecosystem Management (ESM) trains students in the integrated management and planning of interlinked human-nature systems, rooted in ideas and theories focusing on sustainable governance and ecosystem management. The students analyse the theories, tools and ideas presented in current research, as well as in national and international environmental and nature conservation policies and regulations. One particular focus is the role of ecosystem services and biological conservation, including the patterns and processes of biodiversity at different hierarchical levels, the societal problems involved in conservation processes, and the relationship between conservation and sustainable development.Infectious Disease Control (IDC) bridges the medical, environmental, health science and socio-economic aspects of infectious disease control. The biological mechanisms behind infectious diseases, focusing on prevention, diagnostics and therapy, are discussed using a global perspective. The relation of local and global social, environmental factors and climate change to the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases is analysed, and a modern toolbox for the surveillance, evaluation and control of disease spread and epidemics is provided, including epidemiology, GIS, statistics, meta-analysis and mathematical modelling.
