Profile
Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam is ranked highest in continental Europe (source: QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015). It aims at students who would like to deepen their knowledge of linguistics and want to specialize in one or two sub-disciplines of linguistics in a relatively short time. The UvA offers ambitious students the possibility to propose their own track, tailored to their specific interests (e.g., Language Acquisition, Language Change, Sociolinguistics).Alternatively, students can choose one of the four predefined tracks (Clinical Linguistics, Phonetics, Sign Linguistics, Theoretical Linguistics). Due to the wide range of courses they can choose from, students are provided with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with many different theoretical approaches and sub-disciplines.Besides the regular courses, students write a term paper on a topic of their choice and present the findings at a poster festival. They also attend lectures at the ACLC every two weeks by external/international researchers. Finally, students conduct an in-depth research project under close supervision of an ACLC researcher, culminating in their final thesis.
