Profile
The Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Plant Breeding (emPLANT) offers a two-year higher education training of excellence on international level. It is jointly organised by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Polytechnic University of Valencia, the University of Helsinki, Ege University and UniLaSalle. The objective of emPLANT is to remedy to the lack of qualified highly skilled plant breeders on Master and PhD level with a training programme that combines science (agronomy, conventional breeding techniques, genetics, crop science, biotechnology, bioinformatics, big data), management (project management, accounting), law (intellectual property rights) and intercultural competence and language skills.emPLANT combines in-depth understanding of plants and crops, genetics and breeding in the first year and applied specialisations in breeding of forest trees, field crops, fruits, ornamentals, vegetables and grapevine breeding in the second year. In addition, the curriculum provides a joint applied case study in the field of project management of a breeding project and joint courses in intellectual property rights, bioinformatics and big data. Joint activities include an Integration Week, a Summer Breeding Field Camp and a Final Conference with Diploma Ceremony. The first year takes place either at UniLaSalle or the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The second year destinations are the University of Helsinki, the University of Valencia and Ege University. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master thesis. emPLANT has evolved from the European Plant Breeding College, an Erasmus + Strategic Partnership, which aims at cultivating a dialogue between the seed industry, higher education institutions active in plant breeding and research institutions. This dialogue ensures that emPLANT is in line with the needs of the labour market and achieves excellent employability results. emPLANT applies innovative teaching techniques such as a 3-semester case-study, webinars and online courses and offers the opportunity to write a Master thesis as a collaborative project with associated partner institutions. The numerous associated partners of emPLANT will contribute with guest lecturers, internships placements, collaborative project opportunities and advice to the Master programme.
