Biological Sciences is an exciting and rapidly developing subject area, with many applications in the pharmaceutical, food, healthcare, and agri-food industries. Biological Sciences is the study of life and living organisms. In particular, it is the study of how cells work and how they can function individually (like bacteria) or collectively (like plants and animals). There are many branches of study in Biology and many of these specialized areas can be studied in MTU Cork’s Department of Biological Sciences.
On successful completion of year 2, students can enter the third year of any of the following honours biological science degrees:
Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Graduates will be able to grow and engineer biological cells in order to make safe and effective medicines using the most up-to-date information and technologies available.
Nutrition and Health Science Graduates will be able to apply their understanding of human nutrition and its role in health and disease to various sectors of the food and health industry, and identify and address nutrition-related problems in individuals and populations.
Agri-Biosciences Graduates will be able to apply knowledge of the role of biotechnology in agri-food and animal sciences to support and develop technologies (e.g. health, reproduction and diagnostics) for the improvement of global agri-food production systems.
Notes
The Student Contribution Charge for EU students is €3,000. EU tuition may be covered by the Free Fees Initiative. EU-Nationals, who are repeating a full year of study, must pay tuition fees.
Application deadline for EU students is February 1.
Admissions Requirements
High School Diploma with a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 and ACT with a minimum score of 23 or SATS with a minimum score 1140. It is required from applicants to have completed 4 years of English, at least 3 years of Math (4 years recommended) at least 2 years of History/Social Science and a language and at least 2 years of a laboratory science subject (4 years recommended). Specific subjects may be required for entry into certain courses.
