Notes
I planned a trip to Austria after reading about the Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology program at IMC Krems. I was very impressed by the program and featured it as a program of the month. I had high hopes for the school's offerings, and was not disappointed! There are supports in place for international students from the time they enroll up until the time they graduate. The International Welcome Center helps students with the logistics around housing, banking, visas, and such when they arrive. The International Relations Office continues the support throughout the program. The school has strong relationships with industry leaders, which enriches the classroom experience and also leads to internship placements, which are required in all of the programs. Austria's Austrian Universities of Applied Sciences began in 1994 and now educate 50,000 students in the country. The UAS system in Austria is different than others I have experienced thus far. Like in other countries that have reputable UAS programs, there is a practical focus and an emphasis on providing students with the skills and knowledge they will need in the workforce. In fact, the country-wide employment rate for graduates of UAS programs is 90%. Unlike UAS programs in other countries, almost all of the graduates go directly into master’s degree programs, and many graduates do continue on to study in Ph.D. programs. Furthermore, the entry requirements are not lowered necessarily for UAS programs in Austria. This school was chosen for a previous program of the month.
