The course Microbiology (M. Sc.) Covers all areas of microbiological research with prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. Bacterial and fungal systematics, biotechnology, cell biology, genetics, applied microbiology, as well as the interactions of microorganisms with other organisms, but also with the environment, are specific focuses. The study program is designed to be interdisciplinary and includes parts of non-university research institutions such as the Leibnitz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, the Hans Knöll Institute and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology as well as collaborations with associated biotechnology companies.A regional connection to the job market already exists through the close cooperation with biotechnological companies in the application of the Jena School for Microbial Communication, where 12 Jena companies from the biotech / microscopy sector are involved as cooperation partners of the initiative. Nationwide, companies such as BASF, Bayer or Novartis (formerly Farbwerke Höchst / Behringwerke) have long been interested in graduates from Jena microbiology. Internationally (e.g. Novo Nordisk, Denmark; Ciba Geigi, Switzerland, etc.), microbiology in Jena was successfully imparted to graduates.In the M. Sc. Microbiology provides excellent training for research-related professions in universities, non-university institutes and in industry. Occupational fields include: research and development, pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology companies, food industry, chemical industry, test laboratories in hospitals, public administration (health authorities), teaching and training, business and professional associations. The course also qualifies you for a postgraduate doctoral degree in the natural sciences, in particular in the areas of biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, cell biology, medical microbiology or bio-geosciences, which are offered at the Friedrich Schiller University (doctoral training program Jena School for Microbial Communication) as well as in Are represented at home and abroad.
