Profile
In the Bachelor’s programme in Artificial Intelligence in Nijmegen, you study how to make smart computers and robots. To do so, you need to know how the human brain works. For their part, computer models can help in brain research. The Bachelor’s programme in Artificial Intelligence; something for you?To come and study Artificial Intelligence you must be interested in the interaction between humans and computers. In order to build smart computers and robots, knowledge about the human brain is useful. For example, if you know how people recognise faces, you can use this knowledge to develop a passport photo scanner. This also works in reverse; by imitating brain processes using computer models, you learn more about how the mind works. The requirements for passport photos are very strict. For example, your ears must be visible, you have to take off your spectacles and you must look straight at the camera. This is necessary because what you see at a single glance – matching a person to their passport photo – is a more complicated puzzle for a computer to solve. People are champions in rapidly recognising and detecting patterns – regardless of whether it is faces, letters or sounds. How do they do that? How can we program machines to do this as easily? These are the kind of issues the Bachelor’s programme in Artificial Intelligence tackles.
