The Human Nutrition program at ATU Sligo is a science-based program designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the role of diet and nutrition in health and disease prevention. The program integrates various disciplines, including:
- Basic sciences
- Food science
- Physiology
- Biochemistry
- Psychology
- Specialized nutrition modules
Throughout the program, students gain a strong foundation in scientific principles and their application to human nutrition. Students develop a critical understanding of:
- The relationship between diet and health across the lifespan
- Nutritional needs of individuals and populations
- Food safety and security
- Public health nutrition
- Sports and exercise nutrition
- Clinical nutrition
The program incorporates a significant amount of laboratory and practical work, allowing students to develop hands-on skills in food analysis, nutritional assessment, and other areas.
In later years, students can choose a specialized area of focus, such as advanced nutrition, public health nutrition, sports & exercise nutrition, or clinical nutrition.
The program includes a mandatory work placement in the fourth year, providing valuable real-world experience in a professional setting.
Notes
Tuition Fee – the Department of Education pays tuition fees for all full-time students who are citizens of a Member State of the EU and who meet the residency requirements. Most full-time undergraduate students will be covered by the Free Fees Initiative scheme for their tuition fee. Students from Northern Ireland or Great Britain do not have to pay tuition fees to study in the Republic of Ireland. All students are liable for the Student Contribution fee: €3,000. Application deadline for EU students is February 1.
Admissions Requirements
High School Diploma with a minimum GPA of 3.0 plus: SAT score of 1000+ (1800 prior to 2016) or ACT composite score of 22 and above or 2-3 Advanced Placement Examinations in relevant subjects with grades 3 and above OR 2-3 SAT subject tests in relevant subjects with a minimum score of 600 in each.
