It’s easy to forget just how pervasive a role communication and media play in the modern world. Mass media, new media, journalism, politics, public policy, and international development are some of the fields a degree course will touch on.​In particular, the capabilities new technology adds to the professional communicator’s toolkit now receive great emphasis. Similarly, the cultural effects of a media-dominated society are critically investigated. A student will also have the opportunity to analyze media representations from different perspectives, exploring issues such as how controversies are depicted in the public eye.​A high degree of general knowledge, critical and creative thinking, and excellent people skills are requirements for a career in communications and media studies. Social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, and history are useful minors in this field. In addition, building an extensive personal network, perhaps by studying abroad and learning a new language, will set you off on the right track.
