Why should I study here?

Umeå University was founded in 1965 and is Sweden's fifth oldest university. Today, we have a strong international presence with students, teachers and researchers from all over the world. As one of the leading comprehensive universities in the nation, we are alive with enthusiasm, innovation, creativity and fresh ideas.

What are the admissions criteria?

Sweden uses a centralized admissions process for all higher education programs.  Applicants apply online to the programs they are interested in. No entrance tests are required, as the basic admission criteria are a high school diploma and English proficiency. In addition, programs may have their own requirements for eligibility.  Another thing to note, students who are in their final year of high school can not apply until after they graduate, since they don't have a diploma.  Given that the application deadline for international students is January 15th, most students will not be able to apply for fall admission directly after high school. Also of note, no matter how many programs an applicant applies to, they will get only one offer.  Applicants are first evaluated for their first choice school.  If they meet the eligibility requirements they are admitted.  If not, they are evaluated for their second choice school, and so on.

What is student life like?

International students are offered a variety of programs to help with acclimatization.  The university holds an orientation course with lectures and activities about Umea and the university.  They also have a buddy program where international students are put in groups with local students and a host program where international students are paired with a host family to provide a glimpse into everyday Swedish life. There are a number of student organizations that include those around religion, music, the arts, international status, pubs, sports,  improv, and more.

Further, there are at least 50 cultural events on campus each year including concerts, dance performances, theater performances, and film screenings. For under 40 euros a month, students can join IKSU Sport which is on campus and one of Europe's largest training facilities.  They offer basketball, soccer, swimming, weights, aerobics, beach volleyball, squash, cross-country skiing, a golf simulator, a variety of fitness classes, and more.

Housing options.

First-year housing is provided for international students who are not from the EU. Housing is within walking distance and costs 290–425 euros per month. All rooms are single occupancy and most have a private bathroom and shower.  The kitchen and common room are shared with 5-9 other students.

Dining information

“There are a number of cafeterias and some restaurants spread throughout the campus. There are also microwave ovens and places to sit down to eat in every building, should you wish to bring your own food."
