Umea University
Description
Umeå University was founded in 1965 and is Sweden’s fifth oldest university. Today, we have a strong international presence with students, teachers, and researchers from all over the world. As one of the leading comprehensive universities in the nation, we are alive with enthusiasm, innovation, creativity, and fresh ideas.
Student Life
International students are offered a variety of programs to help with acclimatization. The university holds an orientation course with lectures and activities about Umea and the university. They also have a buddy program where international students are put in groups with local students and a host program where international students are paired with a host family to provide a glimpse into everyday Swedish life. There are a number of student organizations that include those around religion, music, the arts, international status, pubs, sports, improv, and more. Further, there are at least 50 cultural events on campus each year including concerts, dance performances, theater performances, and film screenings. For under 40 euros a month, students can join IKSU Sport which is on campus and one of Europe's largest training facilities. They offer basketball, soccer, swimming, weights, aerobics, beach volleyball, squash, cross-country skiing, a golf simulator, a variety of fitness classes, and more.
Housing
First-year housing is provided for international students who are not from the EU. Housing is within walking distance and costs 290–425 euros per month. All rooms are single occupancy and most have a private bathroom and shower. The kitchen and common room are shared with 5-9 other students.
